DeReal

A fashion editorial exploring derealisation from the perspective of the West African diaspora

DeReal is a fashion editorial surrounding a condition called derealisation or "dissociative disorder" where sufferers feel the world around them is not real. It explores the notion from the perspective of the West African diaspora who often feel that the world around doesn't feel "real" because we're made to perform alien societal norms to assimilate. One of the most well known examples is the office environment, where Black people are known to code switch. Afro-surrealist TV shows and films like Get Out, Sorry to Bother You, Atlanta and They Cloned Tyrone take these ideas further. By presenting the juxtapositions and obstacles in surrealist formats, they expose how strange it is to spend most of life morphing yourself to survive.
