The importance of independent media

A free press is crucial for a functioning democracy. The general public need a diverse range of viewpoints to build a comprehensive understanding of an issue.

According to the Media Reform Coalition 83% of  the U.K. national newspaper market is owned by just 3 companies as of 2021.

A Sutton Trust report found that 80% of editors went to private school, whilst just 11% of journalists are from working class backgrounds and just 0.2% of journalists are Black.

A media landscape almost exclusively composed of the most privileged in society is never going to challenge the status quo. But we will. Sludge Magazine is committed to amplifying voices from marginalised communities and challenging power whenever necessary. Our only loyalty is to honest and well reasoned dialogue.
