NYK explains the aftermath of Matt Healy in Malaysia
YouTube: Sludge Magazine
1975 frontman Matt Healy's recent controversial performance at Malaysia's Good Vibes Festival saw him kiss a male bandmate in apparent protest of the country's discriminatory laws against LGBTQIA+ people. The festival was cancelled shortly thereafter. Opinion is divided with some outlets and members of the Malaysian community accusing him of having a "white savour" complex. Others credit him for highlighting an important social issue. We have no desire to focus on Matt Healy as an individual. We think it's important to highlight the opinions of Malaysians affected by the stunt. The implications for the Malaysian music scene, sexual minorities, the food vendors who saw thousands of meals wasted in a developing country and festival goers after the concert was cancelled. We spoke to NYK, a Malaysian artist and resident to get his perspective on the stunt, Malaysian politics and activism through music.
